Full disclosure: I’m voting for Pete Buttigieg. Regardless of who you are voting for in the upcoming Democratic Primary, though, this is a fascinating read both for the profile on a young Mayor Pete and because of what it tells us about what shaped a generation — my generation — which is just now beginning to take the reins of power. The 2000 election, 9/11, and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars all shaped the political ideals of Millennials, and Buttigieg is no different. While different Millennials have obviously come to different conclusions (Buttigieg a progressive, Ocasio-Cortez a socialist, Matt Gaetz a Trumpian), it’s worth considering the context in which those of us born in the 1980s came of age as we ourselves become the adults in the room.
