The Miseducation of the American Boy — The Atlantic

Peggy Orenstein has produced a lot of excellent reporting on American masculinity over the past 25 years. This piece, adapted from her book Boys & Sex, is an important look at how masculinity is constructed as Gen Z reaches adulthood. It’s a harrowing portrait of boys afraid to express their emotions, who equate sexual power over women with manhood yet know that it is wrong, and who are desperately trying to navigate a world in which what it means to be “a man” is far from straightforward. Orenstein is great at being both sympathetic to the boys she talks to while also holding them to account for their misogyny, racism, and homophobia. Conversations like this are crucial, and I hope that this latest contribution from one of the greatest writers on masculinity will help us discuss the ways in which we’re failing our boys — and what that means for our girls.
